Online Exhibition: TRACE. distilled nature

An exhibition of paintings by Helen Rawlinson and Sarah Seymour.

Both artists are interested in depicting elements of the natural world through the exploration of colour, texture and pattern. Taking this further from the figurative representation to the essence of the subject in an abstract form leaving only a trace of the original.

Sarah Seymour
The Australian Bird series.

A 2019 visit to Australia led to this new body of work. By selecting only the birds encountered as a starting point, the work strives to encapsulate the essence of the bird by simply focusing on the colours. By stripping away much of the form to leave the colour to depict the species, the essence of the bird is represented. The latest catastrophic wildfires that have ravaged the area of Australia Sarah visited, making the appreciation of the birds all the more poignant.

Helen Rawlinson

This body of work has evolved from investigating flowers and their colour. Along with this is the concept of layers and marks we leave behind, that become a part of our environment. Exploring and combining; print making, collage, oil paint and cold wax. Working in an organic way to build the colour and pattern.

This exhibition opened on 6th March 2020 and was supposed to run until 31st March 2020 at Rye Creative Centre Gallery. Due to the Corona virus pandemic it had to terminate early and we hope this online version offers a snapshot of the show to everybody who could not make it while the works were on display.
