AIMS AND OBJECTIVES

This weekly course will focus entirely on how we draw and will look carefully at the information gathered through the act of drawing. Additional emphasis will also be placed on mark making and the languages of drawing alongside compositional skill development both pictorially and spatially.

CONTENT

1) Portrait Drawing

Portrait drawing will focus on structure and form and the understanding of the person or personality of the subject . Traditional set ups will used alongside a more theatrical approach. Luke will set a range of tasks for these sessions and work with you as a group and on an individual basis leading to a structured and clearly explained crit at the end of each session. Historical and contemporary works will be recommended for further study and research at the end of each session .

2) Life Drawing

The human form – structure, form and meaning. Students will engage with life as a means of developing a rigorous discipline of looking and realisation . The emphasis will on learning traditional drawing skills i.e anatomy, proportion , form and structure  in conjunction with a poetic and lyrical approaches

Life drawing will also be a key theme for these workshops; we will deal principally with form and feeling. Luke will encourage students to engage with all aspects of the life drawing process including selecting poses deciding on length of sittings and critically reviewing and evaluating each other’s work. Luke will teach core study topics such as proportion, creating form with line and understanding the emotional value of a pose – ideal for further development and preparation for combining figures in more ambitious work later on.

3) Still Life Drawing

The fundamentals of drawing :

1) composition – form and space

2) drawing and truthfulness- the authenticity of line and Mark making

3) the spirit in the mass – lyricism and poetic representation

Still life drawing will examine the history of the still life from Dutch masters to pop art . The aim will be to develop a deeper appreciation of the genre and its uses as a means of finding a personal language for picture making. Still life drawing will focus once again on composition and the art of assembling and developing a strong composition. Luke will be teaching composition and design, geometry and layout alongside quality of line, lyricism and what makes a strong emotive drawing work. Key historical and contemporary references will be used to support learning and provide clear examples of all ideas presented in the workshop .

ASSESSMENT & FEEDBACK

Critical feedback throughout the course will be given, alongside groups crits. Students will be encouraged to take an active part and be able to contextualise their own drawing practice within a contemporary or historical context. Self assessment alongside tutor directed feedback will be used to inform further actions and goal setting.

In essence drawing is where and how I give life to my ideas, everything starts as a line and has been drawn many, many times. When I paint I hold my drawings close, they are my road map and the anchor holding me to account. My studio is full of drawing books that I assemble myself and use like a library of feelings, a private language from which I can pick and choose characters, scenes and subjects.
