Landscape Painting in Oils with Georgie Watson - Countryside
I am running two oil painting workshops in May for anyone interested in building their confidence in oils, with landscape as the subject.
These workshops will be based at Rye Creative Centre where we have a lovely art room with lots of natural light. The 2 workshops will focus on different elements of landscape painting which means you can benefit from both or just one.
You will need to bring your own paints, palette, brushes and solvents of which I will supply a list below if you do not already have them. there will be easels for the day and I will supply panels for you to paint on unless you prefer canvas or paper which you can bring with you.
As the weather warms up I plan some plein air painting workshops at different locations in the area. Let me know if there’s somewhere you would love to paint.
£75 for one workshop or £135 for two - a maximum of 8 students
Workshop 2: Countryside
When:
18th May 2024 10am-3.30pm
Cost:
£75.00
How the day will run:
Bring along a countryside image of your choice or I can email you a choice from my collection of references.
We’ll start with your set up: your materials, paints mediums, and surfaces to paint on. I paint on my own prepared gessoed boards for smaller works and and will provide everyone with one of these to work on for the day. You are welcome to bring a canvas or paper if you prefer. No larger than A4
Planning your landscape painting: we will discuss what makes an interesting painting looking at some examples and how to make small thumbnails to help with design, breaking down your scene into just 4 or 5 large shapes.
Selecting your colour palette for landscape, colour mixing and how to work from thin to thick and from dark to light for the best results.
I will demo at each stage to help you understand the process. I anticipate everyone working independently throughout the afternoon with my help when needed.
Materials you will need:
I’m obviously happy for you to bring along any paints and brushes and solvents/mediums you already use as long as they are roughly based on the selection below. Include your apron/old top, and rags or kitchen roll.
Oils:
Winton range is fine yellow ochre, cadmium yellow pale hue or chrome yellow hue, lemon yellow, alizarin or permanent rose, cadmium red hue, cadmium orange hue, cerulean blue, ultramarine blue, burnt sienna or terra rosa, black or blue/black.
Brushes/palette knife/palette:
I recommend just a small selection of brushes to start. If you are local you can buy these in ArtWrite Rye:
A large flat size 8 or 10
A smaller flat size 6 and
A couple of small rounds size 2 and 4
Just one small palette knife for mixing size 3 or 4
A basic flat palette wooden or perspex.
There are starter sets on Jacksons online art supplies that are good value that I have shared links with below:

Medium/solvent:
For these workshops I will just be using a low odour solvent for thinning paint contained in a brush washer or if you are using water based oils you will only need water. You can use the brush washer for your solvent or dippers , links for both below or you can purchase from Artwrite Rye:
