The shadow of war hangs over the first half of this programme. The Northern Irish composer Joan Trimble wrote her Phantasy Trio in 1940, while working six days a week in a London hospital, on call around the clock. Its elegiac tone is offset by a bouncy Irish jig.

Frank Bridge’s epic Trio No. 2 comes from the late 1920s, one of a series of tough, challenging pieces Bridge composed in response to the First World War. Dismissed at the time as hopelessly modern, it now shines out as one of Bridge’s greatest achievements, visionary and uncompromising.

No shadows appear in Brahms’ C major Trio. Written at the height of his powers, it is chamber music at its most joyous, played by this exciting new trio.

This event is part of the Rye Arts Festival’s 50th-anniversary celebrations.
