MARGINS | 30 July - 20 August | Rye Creative Centre
We are very excited to host our Studio Summer Show: MARGINS

This first group exhibition in the recently refurbished Old Gym will be curated by artist Matthew Burrows, the founder of the pioneering Artist Support Pledge. Bringing together the work of the studio holders of Rye Creative Centre, MARGINS will be a selling show presenting over 100 works from printmaking and sculpture to painting, photography and textiles.

Burrows, who received an MBE in 2020 for Services to the Arts during the pandemic said: “I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to curate the Studio Summer Show … It is my hope that by my encouragement in looking beyond the page and into the margins of RCC, I will help illuminate the rich diversity of artists living and working in and around Rye.”

Opening Times:

Monday – Wednesday: 10am – 4pm

Thursday – Sunday: 10am – 6pm

Booking not required. Please note there is a café on-site, serving hot and cold drinks, light savoury bites and sweet treats. Open daily.

“ Perhaps we take it for granted that artists live and work on the margins of our towns and cities, often occupying the places and buildings abandoned when the utility of others has run its course. Spaces outside the habitual behaviours of society are a familiar territory for the adventurous imagination. Artists occupy the margins of our thoughts and imaginations too, rather like the use of the margins of a page. We might use them to make our notes to facilitate understanding, or to give the page structure and form; or as a special space where new thoughts are possible, if only partially imagined.

Similarly, Rye Creative Centre sits on the margins of Rye, quietly offering a space where a community of artists could work and share their efforts. The studio is a special place for any artist. For a Town like Rye to offer such a valued and generous space to a community of creatives, gives a generous margin in which thoughts, ideas, images, emotions and possibilities can be born and given form.

I am delighted to have been given the opportunity to curate the Studio Summer Show and to help share the activities of Rye Creative Centre with the larger community of Rye, Sussex and Kent. I hope that, by my encouragement, in looking beyond the page and into the margins of Rye Creative Centre, I will help illuminate the rich diversity of artists living and working in and around Rye.” Matthew Burrows, MBE
