Introduction to natural dyeing

  • Rye Creative Centre New Road England, TN31 United Kingdom (map)

Natural dyeing may seem complicated, but this introductory workshop will give you what you need to start having fun with this craft.

In this workshop Tara Macdonald will introduce you to the fundamentals of natural dyeing. The use of botanical material; flowers, barks, leaves and roots to colour fabrics, is an ancient and fascinating craft.  Fabric preparation through scouring and mordanting; using different dye materials and the use of modifiers will all be explored. You will have the opportunity to test a variety of dyes to see some of the range of colours available. Finally, you will use some basic tie dye techniques to create a silk or cotton scarf for you to take home.

Cost: £45

Tara began her career as a horticulturalist and garden designer. Her fascination with craft and plants has led her to develop her practice in botanical dyeing. She loves to use gathered plants and those she grows in her own garden in her work.
